Meewasin Valley recognized in prestigious publication

Our province has been recognized as one of the places to visit in the eighth annual Globe and Mail piece called “Hidden Canada: 2025.” More specifically, the Meewasin Valley – which runs at total 105-kilometres north, south and through Saskatoon — was No. 1 out of the shoot. Bill Waiser, a noted Saskatoon historian and author, wrote the story for the Globe, and no one could do it better.

The focus of Waiser’s piece was the Beaver Creek Conservation Area, which is a hidden gem – even for many locals – about 15 minutes south of Saskatoon, starting on Lorne Avenue. “Beaver Creek’s grasslands are one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world today. It’s rare for land not to be broken by the plough, especially in Saskatchewan, and the area offers visitors a unique experience,” Waiser wrote. His group of 20 was invited to lie face down in the grass. “We are encouraged to immerse ourselves in our surroundings: feel the ground, smell the vegetation and listen.” In a coulee, there was a herd of sheep. Sheep are brought in to help to maintain the health and diversity of the grasslands, Waiser wrote. The group’s day ended with a scrumptious farm-direct meal – Grazing Dinner — in the gorgeous setting. Soon, we will share this beautiful and unique location – and many, many others on the trail and in the province — with travellers from Canada and beyond. And we should check them out as well.
