Sesame milk is a non-dairy milk alternative that is made from sesame seed and water, a perfect option for those who are lactose intolerant or follow a vegan or dairyfree diet. Sesame milk has seven per cent more calcium than cow’s milk. This milk is rich in protein, Vitamin D and fibre. There are many benefits of sesame milk, including that it’s high in nutrients. It is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, which is crucial for maintaining strong bones and teeth. Its phosphorus, zinc and iron play a vital role in oxygen transportation throughout the body. Magnesium supports various functions of the body, including nerve and muscle function. Vitamin B6 and E are powerful antioxidants. Sesame milk also contains healthy fats — Omega-3 fatty acid.
Furthermore, because sesame milk is cholesterol-free and low in saturated fat, it’s a healthy choice. Rich in antioxidants, this milk helps protect your cells from damage. It has low calorie content which makes it a great choice to lose or maintain weight. It contains lignans which have prebiotic properties, and boost heart health. It may help lower the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL), and has an anti-inflammatory property that can reduce the blood vessels’ inflammation. It supports skin health, with a high content in Vitamin E
How to make sesame milk:
• Soak the sesame seeds in water overnight
• The next day drain them and rinse to remove any impurities.
• Put them in a blender with fresh water — one cup of sesame seeds to 4 cups of water, blend until it is smooth and creamy, normally it takes 1-2 minutes to reach the desired texture.
• Then strain the mixture and your milk is ready. It can be stored in a refrigerator for 3-4 days; always give it a good shake before consuming. It has a smooth and creamy texture that makes it great to put in your coffee or in your bowl of cereal.
