I had been hearing a lot of buzz around a new book, Flat Out Delicious, by author Jenn Sharp and photographer Richard Marjan.
Intrigued, I requested a copy from the library this past fall. Once I received the book, it didn’t take long for me realize that this was a book that needed to be purchased. Right away, I ordered copies to give as Christmas gifts.
Flat Out Delicious is a book celebrating Saskatchewan’s food producers and food artisans. This book takes you on an adventure across the province, sharing more than 150 stories of fun, innovative and inspiring things being done to feed folks throughout our province.
Nearby businesses featured, include Cobblestone Farm of Davidson, Rosedale Bison of Hanley, Grain & Pulse Bakery Cafe in Imperial, Kaleidoscope Vegetable Gardens in Dundurn, JE Ranch in Holdfast and Nokomis Craft Ales.
Jenn Sharp, a writer based out of Saskatoon, is originally from Craik. Passionate about food, she has been sharing stories about Saskatchewan’s food scene for several years in media throughout Saskatchewan and Canada.
To turn this passion into a book, she spent four months travelling the province with Richard Marjan, with a journey spanning boreal forests in the north to grain fields in the south. They visited diners, beekeepers, distilleries, chocolatiers and more.
Flat Out Delicious has now been turned into a six-part documentary series that will air on CityTV. The series traces Saskatchewan ingredients from field to plate.
Some highlights include visits to a regenerative lentil farmer, and time with a mushroom foraging couple.
Each episode concludes with a chef creating a meal with one of the highlighted ingredients. The series began Feb. 24 at 10 p.m. on CityTV Saskatchewan and will also stream online.
As we continue to stay close to home, it is a perfect time for a little daydreaming and nurturing plans for future fun.
Flat Out Delicious is full of inspiration for those who may be looking forward to spring or summer road trips. It’s a great resource for those who want to connect and support small businesses that make our province so interesting.
The creative and exciting people Flat Out Delicious features makes it easy to want to support local. I already have a list of must-try eateries, small-town farmers’ markets, and farms I can’t wait to visit.
Flat Out Delicious excels at showcasing a diverse group of people contributing to Saskatchewan’s wonderful and unique food culture.
